Online car insurance site questions "green" policies

An online car insurance quote comparison service has been questioning the value of "green" car insurance policies.

With several major motor insurers, including Co-operative Insurance Services (CIS) and More Than, offering eco-friendly car insurance, GoCompare.com is looking into exactly what these policies are giving UK motorists.

A spokesperson for the online car insurance site admits that whilst there is some environmental benefit, this comes at extra expense for the customer.

She said: "I struggle with some of these products and wonder if the "green" benefits are marketing gimmicks.

"At the end of the day, the customer is paying for the green benefit. Yes, the provider is giving back to the environment, but in most cases it's a contribution that is coming out of your own premium."

However, a spokesperson for CIS explained that this is not always the case, saying: "All donations are made from our own profit margin, not from our customers' premiums. There's nothing to lose by choosing the green option - it does not cost our policyholders any extra, even though people automatically think it will."
