Report criticises online car insurance comparison sites

A Defaqto report has accused online car insurance comparison sites of misleading consumers as to the source of their motor insurance quotes.

The report suggests that sites such as moneysupermarket.com, gocompare.com and confused.com do not provide car insurance quotes which are truly representative of the UK market.

It alleges that many online car insurance aggregator sites do not offer quotes from major insurers, whilst also falsely increasing quotes by using very high excess levels as default.

A spokesperson for Defaqto commented: "People using these sites should be careful to check exactly what they are being sold. In particular, they should pay close attention to excess levels and policy add-ons.

"Customers should also think carefully before buying the cheapest policy as often the cheaper policies will not offer extra benefits like a courtesy car or assistance following an accident."

In its report, Defaqto said that the new online car insurance site TescoCompare offered a better service for comparing motor insurance than its more established rivals.
