Online car insurance company warns drivers not to have a 'bumper' Christmas

An online car insurance company is warning Christmas shoppers to be careful following its findings that 73% of motorists had been involved in scrapes and shunts whilst parking.

Swiftcover.com carried out a survey of 1,500 drivers and discovered that two thirds of drivers get het up while trying to beat other motorists to car parking spaces, increasing their chances of a prang.

Craig Staniland of the online car insurance firm said: "With the added stress levels of fighting other frantic shoppers for limited parking spaces during the festive period, we're advising drivers to take a deep breath and chill out a little."

The researchers found that motorists were most likely to come back to a dented car when parked in a supermarket car park, with 43% of stationary incidents occurring there. Drivers aren't much safer in town centre car parks or retail parks either, as these account for 30% of reported accidents.

However, very few motorists were found to claim on their motor insurance policy after such an incident, most likely because they do not wish to see the last of cheap car insurance by losing their no claims bonus.

Mr Staniland advised drivers to be watchful when they are parking, saying: "After all, 'tis the season to be jolly - if you're not careful, you could have a 'bumper' Christmas - but for all the wrong reasons!"
