Would you pass your driving test now?

Cheap car insurance and good driving generally go hand in hand. However, how many drivers could confidently say they would pass their driving test again if they re-took it now?

With the UK driving test in the process of being overhauled, Which? Car asked five drivers to re-sit their test, three of them failed.

The poor scores attained by the candidates and the examiner's criticisms show how badly driving can deteriorate even within a few years. The drivers that took part in the study ranged from 21 to 64 and as with the standard driving test, they had to accrue no more than 15 standard faults and no serious faults.

One female driver involved in the trial had held her driving licence for just two years and nine months yet she still managed to fail the test by incurring 17 standard driving faults. Another driver managed to get 14 driving faults and two serious after failing to signal coming off of a roundabout.

The driver with the 'cleanest' test was the Which? Car deputy editor who managed to pass with nine driving faults.

The most common driving faults that the group incurred were not checking blind spots, and a failure to check mirrors regularly.

Claire Evans, deputy editor, Which? Car says: "As the driving test is getting tougher, it's a good time to reassess your skills - or lack of them. We recommend that even experienced drivers take refresher or advanced driving courses over the years, which not only improve driving, but may also lower [car] insurance premiums."

Considering the rather pathetic tests achieved by the drivers, refresher driving tests may be a good idea and certainly will help you find cheap car insurance.
