Drivers face higher penalties for mobile phones offences

From 2007, motorists who get caught using a hand-held mobile whilst driving might have to do more than get a quote from an online car insurance firm to find a cheap insurance deal.

The Road Safety Bill, due to be approved on Wednesday 15th November 2006, states that drivers who use hand-held mobiles while behind the wheel will get three points on their licence and a £60 fine. These penalties will also apply to motorists who do not have proper control of their vehicle because they are using a hands-free kit.

Many motorists still have not got around to buying a hands-free kit, despite the fact that it has been five years since the legislation making the use of hand-held mobiles illegal was ratified.

However, it is hoped that the new, tougher treatment of drivers breaking the law in by using mobiles will make them change their ways and there will be a reduction in the number of accidents and injuries caused by distraction.

Online car insurance company Confused.com has revealed that one three-point penalty conviction will result in around a 7% increase in motor insurance rates, whilst two convictions will prompt a massive 21% rise and a third can put up a driver's car insurance quote by more than 50%.

Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "It is still really common to see people driving along with their phone held up to their ear.

"Perhaps when these motorists are facing a fine, penalty points and much more expensive car insurance, they might think twice about it."
