Roundabout crash driver not to lose car insurance rate

A Scottish pensioner has escaped a driving ban and a higher car insurance rate after causing an accident by driving the wrong way round a roundabout. His Renault 25 collided with a younger driver in a Ford Focus, despite evasive action.

The man, an ex-lawyer, claimed that he had been lost while trying to reach the M9 near Stirling, in Scotland, and had not realised in the rain that he was joining a roundabout. The original charge of dangerous driving was dropped when the prosecution accepted his guilty plea to the lesser charge of careless driving.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard that the man had disposed of his car and did not plan to drive again, and handed down a £350 fine and eight penalty points. The sheriff said, "The consequences of this accident could have been much more serious."

If the ex-lawyer should decide to drive again, this will have allowed him to find a cheaper policy on his car insurance rate than if the sentence had included a driving ban.
