Car drivers could benefit from advanced training

Errors by motorcyclists and drivers, some of whom have the cheapest car insurance for their vehicle, are the most common cause of serious accidents, which often lead to damage claims, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Car insurance holders may be surprised to hear that alcohol plays only a small part in many fatal incidents and that adverse weather conditions and poorly maintained roads are also a relatively minor cause of traffic-related deaths.

Drivers who neglect the rules of the road by speeding, making illegal u-turns and tailgating, stand a higher chance of being involved in crashes than those who adhere to The Highway Code's advice.

In addition, the IAM's report revealed that motorists who are travel "too fast for the conditions" are more likely to crash their vehicles than those who simply go over the speed limit.

The Chief Executive of IAM, said, "What is obvious from the top three rankings is that many accidents could be prevented by drivers simply changing their behaviour, as well as gaining more experience.

"Having a driving licence doesn't necessarily mean that drivers have the skills they need to be safe. Accidents could be easily reduced by improving driver skills and lives could be saved – especially those of young drivers."

Motorists have been reminded that they can increase their chances of staying safe and receiving the cheapest car insurance quotes by taking an advanced training course.
