Pothole problem for Scottish car insurance policies

Research by Warranty Direct has shown that drivers in Scotland suffer from the worst-kept roads in the UK and regularly have to make motor insurance claims after driving over potholes.

23% of Scottish car insurance claims are made because of damage caused by potholes and poor road surfaces. In comparison, pothole damage accounts for an average of around 11% of motor insurance claims made in England.

Hitting a pothole at speed can cause serious suspension damage, which can cost a great deal to repair. Some car insurance companies have had to pay out up to £975 for repairs following this kind of damage.

A spokesman for Warranty Direct said: "Suspension failure is now a real problem for the motorist. It seems unfair that the public should be financially penalised once again for choosing to drive on our roads.

Corrine Aldous of the online car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services commented: "Most drivers can name one or two potholes that are particularly bad but many do nothing about them.

"It is advisable to report a pothole to your local authority so that they are made aware of the problem and so you can avoid making an expensive claim on your online car insurance policy.
