Many seatbelt-free drivers may invalidate their car insurance policy

A report by moneysupermarket.com has revealed that a large number of people are driving outside the terms of their car insurance policy by not wearing seatbelts. This could mean that, despite the motor insurance premiums that they have paid, the car insurance company may not be required to pay out on a claim.

A quarter of UK drivers interviewed admitted driving without a seatbelt, for reasons varying from forgetfulness to overconfidence. The head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com called this figure "astonishing" and said that, "as well as being a lifesaver, a seatbelt can be an extra precaution for your finances, helping ensure insurance claims are paid out and you don't get a £500 fine."

Since 1982, seatbelts have been legally enforced in the UK, and remain the simplest and most effective way to prevent serious injury in a car accident. Often, a motor insurance company will demand the use of seatbelts in its car insurance policy documents.
