Online car insurance firm finds speeding most common conviction

An online car insurance company in Canada has found that 16% of those searching for cheap car insurance quotes in 2006 had one or more driving convictions.

Kanetix.ca looked at motorists in a number of provinces, and found that whilst 16% on average had tickets, there was some variation between the areas.

A spokesperson for the online car insurance company said: "For example, we found that 17% of Alberta quotes, 16% of Ontario quotes, 15% of Quebec quotes, 12% of New Brunswick quotes, 9% of Prince Edward Island quotes, and 8% of Nova Scotia quotes included at least one ticket."

The research also looked at which offences had been committed by the drivers in each province, and found that the vast majority had been caught speeding.

The Kanetix.ca spokesperson continued: "Without fail, the most common traffic ticket entered across the provinces was for speeding up to 45km/h over the posted limit. Add to this a cross-country inability to obey traffic signals and signs, and you've got the two most common tickets to all six provinces in our study."

It is likely that those who have received these kinds of tickets will face more costly motor insurance premiums, as they will be considered to be in a higher category of risk.
