Drivers undeserving of cheap car insurance

Research by What Car? has shown that many motorists may not deserve their cheap car insurance premiums.

With a previous survey revealing 79% of motorists feeling that the standard of driving on the UK's roads is falling, What Car? decided to put them to the test. In a driving test mock up, just 25% of those taking part in the research were given a pass.

There were a variety of reasons why the 75% remainder failed the test, including bad eyesight, poor use of mirrors, speeding, and driving too close to the vehicle in front - all of which could mean they are putting their cheap car insurance rates at risk on a daily basis.

A spokesperson for What Car? said: "It's no surprise driver error is partly responsible for 95% of car accidents in the UK. We see examples of bad driving every day on our roads, but most people think they are perfectly safe behind the wheel.

"We believe drivers should be made to take regular refresher courses with a qualified driving instructor. It would remind people what is required when they get behind the wheel.

"For some, the test is a distant memory and although they might think they are safe, they could well be a danger to themselves and other road users."

A BSM road safety expert also commented that he believes learner drivers should undergo a longer test, which will serve to better protect themselves and their motor insurance premiums.
