Smoking ban could pose risk to motor insurance quotes

The July 2007 ban on smoking in enclosed public places in England could mean more drivers risk their motor insurance quotes by puffing away at the wheel.

According to research by a cheap car insurance company, Scotland saw a 14% increase in the number of motorists smoking whilst driving when it introduced its ban on lighting up in public places.

The research by Privilege also showed that 11% of drivers felt their driving skills had been compromised by smoking in the car, which bodes poorly for those hoping to preserve their cheap motor insurance quotes.

A spokesperson for Privilege said: "Drivers are already prohibited from using hand-held mobile phones when driving, and last year Privilege revealed that drivers are twice as likely to crash when they are eating or drinking, so puffing on a cigarette most certainly won't be safe."

As well as the distraction risk of smoking in the car, many motorists feel that it also poses a health risk to children and other passengers in the car and 70% said they would support a ban on smoking while driving if this was proven to be true.
