Insurance prices may go down as crash numbers reduce

An increased amount of motorists may obtain affordable car insurance as the number of road deaths has reduced considerably across the UK, according to the Department for Transport.

The government agency has revealed that 1,858 people were killed in accidents during 2010. This represents a 16% reduction on the figure recorded for 2009.

The head of road safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is of the opinion that major strides have been taken in the campaign to make the roads a safer place.

He stated, "This proves the value and effectiveness of a comprehensive road safety strategy which has strong government leadership and involves the joint working of the road safety community."

The director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) also welcomed the news that driver casualty rateshave reduced. However, he urged the government to offer more backing to the development of post-test driving schemes.

People who take courses like those offered by the IAM will not only develop their motoring skills, but should also stand an improved chance of obtaining cheap car insurance.

An IAM representative said that "every individual motorist has to take responsibility for their own road risk, whether that means improving their driving through further training, or simply by taking a bit more care".

In related news, a leading motoring expert has stated that fewer car insurance claims would be made following night time accidents if motorists ensured that their exterior lights were in good working order.
