Safe Speed campaigns for better driver education

Motoring organisation "Safe Speed" is campaigning for a change in the way drivers are taught to be safer. It believes that too much emphasis is being placed on complying with rules and regulations and not educating and training drivers to become more skilful behind the wheel.

Paul Smith, founder of Safe Speed, said: "Fundamentally we need to do two things to earn safer roads. We need to help the vast majority of responsible drivers to manage risks better and we need to use the force of law against irresponsible drivers. Presently we are doing very badly at both."

He believes that the reason that so many accidents are happening every day on our roads is due to the fact that many motorists do not possess adequate driving skills.

He commented: "Road safety isn't mainly a matter of compliance with regulations - instead it is a question of just how good we are at managing risk.

"The risk management skills of concentration, observation, anticipation, hazard recognition, hazard assessment and hazard response are the true heart of road safety."

As a long-time anti-speed camera campaigner, Mr Smith also supports the use of more police on the roads and less reliance on machines.

He is scathing of the driving population who don't have motor insurance or a licence, calling them "grossly irresponsible rogue drivers" and saying that there are "insufficient police" to deal with the problem.

Corrine Aldous of the cheap car insurance firm duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "I certainly agree with Mr Smith's point that drivers are not good enough at managing risk.

"If this skill could be improved, hopefully fewer people will lose their cheap car insurance after being involved in avoidable accidents."
