Irish pedestrians urged to wear reflective armbands
"Be Safe Be Seen", a new initiative in Donegal, will not only protect drivers' cheap motor insurance quotes but also, more importantly, will help to save lives.
The campaign, organised by the Donegal Road Safety Working Group, aims to reduce the number of car accidents where pedestrians are hit by a car driver who did not see them in the dark. Ireland has the third highest pedestrian death rate in the EU and sadly many of the victims are children.
Pedestrians and cyclists are both urged to wear brightly coloured clothing, such as reflective armbands and vests, so that they are easier to see on gloomy evenings. The group is even giving away free armbands to encourage people to make the effort which could prevent a serious accident.
Martin Hefferman of the Road Safety Authority advised: "Wearing a reflective waistcoat or armband will help you to be seen from a distance.
"You should also wear light-coloured clothing if possible and carry a torch on country roads. Remember just because you can see a vehicle does not necessarily mean they can see you."
Corrine Aldous of cheap motor insurance quote company duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "I hope that lots of people take this group up on their offer of free reflective armbands otherwise we risk seeing many more road fatalities this winter."
