Sainsburys car insurance survey reveals worrying trend
Despite the high cost of car insurance renewal once you have had an at-fault car accident; it seems that many motorists are still willing to take risks behind the wheel.
According to research from Sainsburys Car Insurance two thirds of motorists confess to risky driving habits in the last year.
The survey found the amount of drivers admitting the chancy behaviour is increased by 35% on last years figures.
Eating or drinking at the wheel was the most usual transgression with 41% of the 1000 motorists polled owning up to it.
Over 25% had driven whilst feeling tired, and 18% admitted driving barefoot or in flip-flops and more people appear to be trying to drive whilst reading a map as figures rose by 4% to 17%.
Worryingly, 17% admitted speeding and 14% owned up to chatting on a mobile phone hand-held whilst driving.
More risky use of mobile phones was illustrated by 11% of drivers who said they had completed text messages whilst behind the wheel.
Driving without a seatbelt was admitted by 10% and 9% confessed drinking and driving.
Drivers from Scotland appear to be the safest, with just 59% admitting risky driving habits; whilst motorists from the North West were the worst offenders with 76% drivers from the area admitting to dangerous behaviour behind the wheel.
A spokesman for Sainsbury's Car Insurance, which carried out the survey, said: 'It can be easy to become complacent behind the wheel of a car especially when driving regular routes, but our advice is to stay alert and safe and don't allow yourself to be distracted."
