Journey times for commuters cut

Motorists can expect to get to work today an average of 12 minutes quicker thanks to the school holidays, car insurance company Elephant.co.uk revealed. With most children off school enjoying their holidays, roads are expected to be 20% quieter during the rush hour leaving motorists to enjoy extra time in bed.

Londoners are expected to make the biggest gain as they will save around 15 minutes of their journey times while those living in the South West are only expected to save 9 minutes 28 seconds.

Managing director Brian Martin said: "Twelve minutes might not sound like much time. But when you add those 12 minutes up over the school holidays it equates to an awful lot of extra time you can enjoy at home rather than being stuck in a car."

Based on the responses of 3000 motorists, the survey by the motor insurance company found that less traffic helps reduce stress levels as well as journey times thanks to shorter jams on busy roads and more free-flowing traffic.

With less traffic on the roads during the rush hour and calmer commuters who are driving, it is hoped that the amount of accidents and car insurance claims will be lower, at least for the holidays.
