Poor driving on school run risks lives and cheap car insurance

School run motorists are risking the lives of children and themselves - as well as cheap car insurance premiums - by dangerous driving on the daily drop-off and pick-up for youngsters.

The scary finding has been revealed in a newly published survey by a car insurance firm.

Also, the study found most car accidents happened on the morning school run (41 per cent compared to the afternoon - 34 per cent). Half of female school runners crashed in the morning.

Parents put poor driving on school trips down to a number of factors:

• Stress
• Fear of being late
• Traffic jams
• In-car distractions
• Tiredness

Another troubling discovery is that 15 per cent of parent / school run drivers owned up to taking children to and from school without using proper child safety seats.

A spokesperson for Duck2water Car Insurance Services said, "School run drivers must strap in children properly, else they risk their child being injured or, heaven forbid, killed.

"Chatty or misbehaving children, fear of lateness and jam-packed, congested roads make for stressful school runs. Drivers must be aware of the dangers and focus on the best driving to keep youngsters safe."

People who live in London risk losing cheap car insurance with 15.2 per cent of them most likely to crash on the school run. North-easterners are next, including Humberside and Yorkshire - 12.5 per cent.
