School run accident rate revealed by cheap car insurance company
Research by Sainsbury's Bank has revealed that the school run is a risk to parents' cheap car insurance premiums.
The motor insurance company commissioned a survey of motorists who take their children to school by car, and found that more than 460,000 drivers have had an accident in the last five years whilst doing so.
However, the implications of this accident rate on motorists' car insurance rates come second to concerns about children's welfare.
Sainsbury's Bank's research also revealed that one in four parents were not aware of the type of restraint which is appropriate for their child.
A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance provider said: "Our research shows that one in four of those driving their children to school has admitted that the children were not always securely fastened in a child seat or booster.
"The familiarity of the route coupled with the often short distances travelled may make parents feel overly confident and therefore less aware of the dangers involved in the school run.
"As parents, we need to treat every journey in the same manner, regardless of the length or familiarity of the journey and take extra care to make sure the seats and boosters are correctly positioned and fastened."
