Reduced sentence will not restore cheap car insurance
A shoplifter in Leamington Spa has had her dangerous driving sentence reduced from 15 months to 10, but this is unlikely to raise her chances of access to cheap car insurance before long. Her year-long driving ban stands.
Her initial theft was of a bottle of whisky; when a security guard attempted to stop this, the shoplifter drove her car directly at him, forcing him to leap on to the bonnet and hold on while she threatened lethal violence.
After the guard jumped from the bonnet, receiving cuts and bruises, the woman led a police chase along the A46 until she was trapped on a slip road.
While the first judge had called her actions "deliberate, sustained and highly dangerous", the appeal judge reduced the sentence, claiming "this was a bad case of dangerous driving but not the worst".
It is possible that cheap car insurance companies may reflect this judge's claim in their motor insurance quotes, but any previous example of dangerous driving will affect the size of premiums.
