No more cheap online car insurance for Del Amitri singer
The lead singer of Del Amitri, Justin Currie, is going to struggle to get a cheap online car insurance deal after he was given a six month driving ban by a Scottish court.
The singer was snapped by a speed camera as he drove between Perth and Inverness on the notorious A9. The court was told that he was driving north from Glasgow on holiday at the time.
The 41-year-old was caught doing 61mph in a 50 zone, an offence which is usually treated as being relatively minor. However, he already had nine points on his licence for previous driving offences and this most recent offence took him to the 12 penalty point maximum.
Fiscal depute Dawn Samson said: "[The punishment] would normally be three points and a £60 fine, but this was not accepted in this case because of the accused's licence." She then banned him from driving for six months and fined him £175.
His defence solicitor said: "He is a professional musician and he was heading north on a family holiday. Although he does use his car, that is not a road he particularly travels on.
"This court knows that junction carries many a person out. Doing 61mph would not otherwise have attracted attention were it not for the reduced speed limit."
duck2water Car Insurance Services spokeswoman Corrine Aldous commented on the story, saying: "When Mr Currie gets his licence back, he is going to really have problems finding a low cost motor insurance deal, even if he goes to an online car insurance company."
