Rat-trap car could save motorists' cheap car insurance
Loughborough Police are hoping to cut car crime - and save residents' cheap car insurance rates - by setting up a car to lure thieves.
The so-called "rat-trap" car will be filled with goodies to attract thieves and then parked in a number of locations which are known for vehicle crime.
However, it is hoped that round-the-clock surveillance and security markings on the contents of the car will snare any opportunist thieves who fall for the trap.
A spokesperson for Loughborough Police said: "We are not enticing people to break into cars but like anyone else we are entitled to park a car and not expect it to be broken into.
"We have set up this rat trap with a number of devices in it to catch anyone who tries to break into it."
However, the police also want to see motorists avoid making their car a target for thieves by removing any expensive possessions from the vehicle when leaving it unattended.
The spokesperson continued: "We have launched a number of initiatives in recent months including writing letters to drivers who leave valuable items on display and we've been giving out small plastic signs which say, 'There is nothing of value in this vehicle.'"
Corrine Aldous of the cheap car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "Although the statistics show that car crime is going down, millions of motorists still become victims of it each year.
"Unfortunately, many drivers do not take the threat of it seriously until their car is broken into - and then it is too late and they have to make a claim on their motor insurance."
