Soaring complaints about car cover claims

Thousands of complaints about motor insurance have been made to a UK consumer watchdog, the financial ombudsman - rising 42 per cent over the last year.

Out of 123,089 complaints to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) about financial services across the nation, 6,009 were about motor insurance - five per cent of the total.

In total, there was a 30 per cent increase in complaints across all sectors offering financial services, including claims about car cover, adding up to a staggering 2,400 complaints on a weekly basis.

Unfortunately perhaps for complainants, decisions on disputes seem to favour companies, not the consumer, as the ombudsman supports the majority of decisions by financial services businesses.

Consumers won most claims for complaints about credit cards (79 per cent) and current accounts (84 per cent).

Complaints about car insurance companies have proven to be "exceedingly low", said the ombudsman, compared to totals for motor insurance claims.
