Double accident costs soldier cheap car insurance
A young driver will be unable to have cheap car insurance for many years since he was in a car crash while on his way to appear in court on a charge of careless driving.
The 18-year-old Royal Signals soldier was going to Dingwall Sheriff Court in Scotland in October 2010 when he was involved in the road traffic accident, shunting a stationary car driven by a 42-year-old woman 33 feet.
When police stopped the man, he said he had damaged his car by hitting a wall but at a court hearing he admitted a second charge of careless driving and failing to stop or giving his name and address after an accident.
His solicitor at Inverness Sheriff Court said that for the original charge of driving carelessly, the Serviceman had been disqualified for five months and that he was about to be sent to Germany with his unit.
The Sheriff warned that the man was at risk of being jailed for having left the scene of the accident and lying to police but instead fined him £200 for careless driving and £400 for leaving the scene.
If the soldier comes to seek a car insurance quote at the end of his further nine months' driving ban, he will find his convictions will have put him beyond cheap car insurance, including policies for young motorists.
