Some drivers prepared to lie
The big motor insurance squeeze is continuing at such a pace that more than half of all drivers would consider lying in order to obtain cheap car insurance, according to a survey by the Association of British Insurers.
The ABI revealed that an alarming number of drivers, young and old alike, would be willing to lie about details such as motoring convictions and no claims history.
Furthermore, one in ten said that they would be willing to provide fraudulent personal details, such as age, address and occupation.
What many may not realise is that if they are caught lying they risk serious penalties such as having their cover invalidated, losing their ability to find cheap car insurance and, potentially, a custodial sentence.
Nick Starling, the ABI's Director of General Insurance and Health, commented, "Trying to deceive your insurer is a false economy that will cost you dear. Of course everyone wants to get the best motor insurance deal, but being less than truthful is not the way to do it.
"Not being honest with your insurer could lead not only to you driving illegally, but to financially crippling bills if involved in an accident, harder to obtain and more expensive future insurance, and difficulties in accessing other financial products."
The ABI recommends that those looking for cheap car insurance should compare quotes and use either a comparison website or an insurance broker.
