Cheap car insurance firms targeted by Southall fraudsters

Statistics from the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) have shown that Southall is the UK capital of scams involving cheap car insurance companies.

It is believed that over 440 fake crashes have occurred in the Southall area of London since 1999, with many spawning multiple fraudulent motor insurance claims.

One of the most common types of car insurance fraud is the set-up accident, where the fraudster will brake harshly and suddenly so that innocent motorists will drive into the back of them. The gang can then pretend to be hurt and make expensive personal injury claims to the person's car insurance company.

The first motor insurance scams discovered in the UK were carried out in the North West of England but the fraud has quickly spread to the rest of the country, with London and the South East being particular hotspots.

John Beadle, chairman of the IFB, said: "The criminal gangs targeting honest motorists are ruthless and innocent lives are being put at risk.

"We must take a rigorous approach to this significant national problem which is impacting many cities across the UK and requires an urgent solution."

A spokesman for cheap car insurance company Direct Line said that they were doing their best to catch out the fraudsters.

He said: "We have dedicated teams of counter-fraud specialists right across the country who utilise a wide range of measures to identify and track down fraudsters in order to ensure that costs are contained."
