Swinton says points can mean cheap car insurance

A leading insurer has revealed that it will keep supplying cheap car insurance to drivers with up to six points on their licence for speeding.

Swinton said that the huge number of motorists who have six points on their licence means that it is "nothing out of the ordinary" and therefore not a risk factor when it comes to calculating motor insurance premiums.

The company estimates that around 10 million UK drivers have points on their licence, with 2 million picking them up in the last year.

A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance firm said: "We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of drivers with penalty points requesting insurance. It is estimated that more than one in six drivers now have points on their licence.

Another spokesperson for Swinton continued: "Penalty points used to be the yardstick for dangerous drivers, but with up to 10 million drivers collecting them, they are so common place that they have become almost pointless.

"We will be looking at each driver as an individual and not automatically upping the cost of their premium if they have six penalty points on their licence."

Swinton revealed that it will consider factors such as location, type of car and full driving history when calculating a driver's cheap car insurance rate.
