Missing grates pose cheap car insurance risk

Motorists travelling around roads in East Sussex are having their cheap car insurance put at risk by thieves targeting drain grates.

According to police, more than 70 metal grates have gone missing in the first few days of May 2007. Thieves have struck in a number of East Sussex towns, including Eridge, Peacehaven, Selmeston and Ringmer.

The sizeable holes left in the road have been described as a "potentially fatal series of hazards", which could cause accidents and result in motor insurance claims.

Police believe that thieves are looking to sell the grates as scrap metal and have warned dealers to be on the lookout for the stolen property.

A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance company duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "These holes could present quite a danger to pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and motorists so all road users travelling through the East Sussex area should watch out for them."
