Motor insurance firm finds people drive fewer miles than a decade ago
A survey by the AA has found that motorists are now driving fewer miles per year than a decade ago, perhaps in an effort to keep the cost of motor insurance quotes down.
The company, which specialises in cheap car insurance and breakdown cover, recently found that just under a fifth of motorists drive more than 13,000 miles each year. This compares to a similar survey in 1996, which found that a quarter of drivers covered this distance or greater on a yearly basis.
If people are driving fewer miles, they may well be able to get cheaper motor insurance quotes. This is because they have less chance of being involved in an accident as they spend less time on the roads. However, it seems unlikely that cheap car insurance is the main reason for this finding by the AA.
It is thought that a decrease in commuting may be at least partially responsible for this drop in mileage. Stuart Cole, director of Wales Transport Research Centre, said that nowadays many people do not need to travel to work in the office every day, thus saving on miles driven.
The AA study also found that there are more older drivers on the roads than ten years ago, with around 30% of the motoring population being over 60.
