Survey casts light on motor insurance

A new survey by moneysupermarket has revealed that women drivers are still more likely to get cheap car insurance than their male counterparts.

The company analysed six million vehicle insurance quotes received between June 2008 and June 2009 and found that men have to pay a staggering 71% more for their premiums

At £500 the average premium price for a woman driver is a full £386 cheaper than the equivalent policy for a male driver.

And cheap car insurance remains the preserve of older drivers, with those over 30 perceived by motor insurance companies as much lower risk.

A spokesperson from moneysupermarket said of the cheap car insurance survey findings, “It is a shame that motor insurance premiums are based on age rather than experience and while it will be hard for younger drivers to find competitive cover, there are ways to cut the costs such as adding a parent to their policy. And motorists who are prepared to shop around for the best deal each year will always come out on top regardless of their age or gender.”
