Online car insurance firm surveys the Yawning Nation
Research carried out by an online car insurance company has revealed the shocking statistic that thousands of UK drivers are nodding off behind the wheel.
Esure, which specialises in cheap motor insurance quotes for drivers with an intact no claims bonus, found that 8% of British motorists have fallen asleep whilst driving in its Yawning Nation survey.
On top of this, almost a third of drivers in the UK admitted to the online car insurance provider that they had experienced micro-sleeps at the wheel.
Esure also looked into the steps which motorists take in order to combat sleepiness while driving, and found that the most common fatigue-beating tactic was to open the window. Other things which drivers do in order to keep awake revealed by the car insurance firm include turning the air conditioning on, putting loud music on, and even slapping their own face.
However, according to the director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, motorists could well be wasting their time with these tactics.
He said: "The methods that drivers say they are using to keep themselves awake in the car are all ineffective. They will not stop people from falling asleep unintentionally or fend off a distracting yawn.
"The only thing to counteract tiredness behind the wheel of the car and fully recharge the human battery is having caffeine followed by two closely spaced 20 to 30 minute naps before setting out."
