Cheap car insurance provider investigates car buying preferences of rural and urban drivers
A cheap car insurance firm has revealed that people living in the countryside have rather different priorities to city dwellers when buying a new car.
The survey, carried out by AA Personal Loans, showed that 16% of rural motorists think that safety is one of the most important issues to consider when buying a car.
Just 11% of people who live in towns agree on this point, with many more choosing to upgrade their car with one that is faster, has more gadgets and other features.
Despite the common belief that people living in a rural area are usually better off than those who live in an urban environment, the survey revealed that the former are much more likely to consider running costs such as motor insurance when buying a new car.
The research also discovered that whereabouts a person lives in the UK has an impact on their choice of car. Motorists from the North of Scotland are keen on small family cars like the Honda Civic or VW Golf, whilst Yorkshire drivers favour MPVs like the Vauxhall Zafira and those in the North East of England prefer super minis such as the Renault Clio.
Lloyd East, spokesman for the cheap car insurance company, said: "There are some interesting regional variations in car choice and stark differences between city and country.
"A car is one of the most important purchases we make and despite an individual's personal tastes, it is important to consider how much a car will cost and also the best way to finance it."
