Warning issued over policies not being valid
Cheap car insurance is likely to be affected by failure to disclose necessary information when taking out policies. A new survey reveals as many as one in ten motorists may have cover that is not valid.
Such failures to reveal important details can mean insurance companies will refuse to pay out for claims.
Some 6% of drivers have admitted to lying about even the most basic details such as address and age. And three per cent were reported to have withheld information by failing to own up to past convictions.
Other issues that can occur to invalidate a policy include:
- Change of job - failing to advise an insurer about job changes or growth in annual mileage levels can lead to cover becoming invalid.
- Bad eyesight - vehicle registration plates must be read from 20.5 metres. It is advisable for a driver to have an eye test if there is any doubt about his or her vision.
- Leaving off information - car insurance policies can be invalidated if a policyholder omits information such as where vehicles are parked overnight.
- Vehicle modifications - again, car insurers may fail to pay out for claims if insurance firms are not told about modifications to cars.
Swinton spokesman Steve Chelton said, "The last thing a motorist wants to do is pay annual premiums only to find their policy is void when the time comes to make a claim."
He advised policyholders to be aware of terms and conditions of their policy else they could risk invalidating cover.
The car insurance survey highlighted in this article was carried out by YouGov.
