Tories propose crackdown on car insurance evaders

The Conservatives are blaming speed cameras for the huge number of people who drive on Britain's roads without motor insurance.

Chris Grayling, shadow transport spokesman, is spearheading the Tory campaign to reduce the number of motorists who do not have a valid car insurance policy - currently estimated to be around 2 million.

Mr Grayling believes that speed cameras are at least in part responsible for the rising number of uninsured drivers. Increasingly, speed cameras have been taking over from traffic police on British roads but Mr Grayling does not think that they are as effective in the fight against motorists without car insurance as they are against speeding.

He commented: "If you have got someone on the road in a knackered car, without a licence and insurance, having a speed camera by the side of the road makes no sense at all because it can't stop them."

The Tories want to get tough on the drivers who break motoring laws and are planning amendments to the Road Safety Bill. As well as calling for an increase to the penalty for not stopping at the scene of an accident, they also plan to call for disqualification for any motorists caught without car insurance.

Corrine Aldous, one of the online car insurance specialists at duck2water Car Insurance Services, said: "It's about time that drivers who don't have motor insurance are penalised properly - at present they just get a relatively small fine.

"Those motorists who think that they can't afford to buy insurance should try getting an online car insurance quote - they might be surprised at how cheap it can be."
