Online car insurance company finds public transport fear

An online car insurance company has revealed that people's preference for cars may well stem from a fear of using public transport.

Two thirds of young drivers reported to Swiftcover.com that they felt safer in their car than on a train or bus and many of this group also felt anxious about using public transport.

Researchers from the online car insurance provider also found that comfort played a part in young people's travel decisions. In the study, cars were chosen as a preferred mode of transport because they are more comfortable than buses and trains.

However, it is not just young people who reject public transport. Over half of car drivers of all ages admitted that they felt unsafe when using shared forms of transport at night. Motorists from the Midlands were found to be the most concerned about this, with 59% becoming nervous when travelling on trains or buses in the evening.

The chief executive of Swiftcover.com, a company which provides web-only motor insurance, said of the findings: "Our results speak for themselves. People are frightened to use public transport and fear for their safety.

"It's not surprising that people seem unwilling to give up the safe haven of their cars for the potential nightmare of public transport.

"The real crux of the matter is that the Government has a responsibility to put measures in place to dramatically drive down crime on public transport."
