Motorists lying to get cheap car insurance

Research by uSwitch.com has revealed that one in ten UK motorists have lied to their insurer in a bid to get a cheap car insurance quote.

The study showed that 6% of motorists lie about personal details such as their age and their address, whilst 5% tell fibs about where they park their car at night in the hope of shaving pounds off their motor insurance premium.

Other tactics that people use in order to get cheap car insurance include failing to disclose motoring convictions such as drink driving, as these drive up the price substantially.

However, not being totally truthful with your insurance provider can invalidate your policy altogether - a fact which three quarters of those surveyed acknowledged.

When asked for the reasons why they had put down incorrect information on their motor insurance quote form, 9% admitted that they had done so with the intention of making their car insurance cheaper, one in three said that they had made a mistake, and 16% said they didn't understand the question.

A spokesperson for uSwitch.com said: "With many consumers seeing car insurance as a grudge purchase, it's no great surprise to see people either withhold or knowingly provide inaccurate, crucial information in order to get cheaper cover.

"To the consumer, this may seem like a little white lie to save money. In reality, it could end up teaching the driver a costly lesson - on average £1,636 - as the provider is under no obligation to settle a claim based on a policy which is inaccurate."
