Survey by cheap car insurance firm reveals millions leave property at risk

Research by a cheap car insurance provider has shown that millions of drivers are putting their cars at risk of break-in by leaving property on show.

Post Office Car Insurance carried out a survey that showed 12% of motorists only very rarely or never cover possessions left in their car. This leaves these cars at a much higher risk of being broken into, which can mean a costly motor insurance claim.

The survey revealed that the average motorist will keep property worth £134 in their car, although one in five admit to leaving over £200 worth of valuables. The most common items left in cars include CDs, coats, shoes, mobiles and stereos.

A spokesperson for the cheap car insurance firm said: "Our advice to motorists is to only leave valuable items in the car if it's absolutely necessary and, if they do, to make sure the items are hidden in the boot or at least out of sight of potential thieves.

"Drivers should also check that they are adequately insured for any valuable items left in the car in case the worst does happen.

"Finally, we ask drivers never to leave documents such as their vehicle registration or car insurance certificate in the car as they may find their car is stolen too," she finished.

The Post Office Car Insurance survey also investigated what items had been taken from cars broken into by thieves. It found an array of bizarre property that had been stolen, including air fresheners, bowling balls, electric shavers and nappies.
