Nuneaton Police keep eye out for motor insurance evaders
Drivers who have failed to get a motor insurance quote and are driving around illegally on Nuneaton's roads are risking a £5,000 fine and penalty points, police warn.
In a crackdown on uninsured driving, Nuneaton and Bedworth police have seized 22 vehicles being driven by people without car insurance.
Inspector Chris Walton of Nuneaton Police said: "People do take the chance of driving with no insurance, particularly young drivers as it is very expensive.
"If you are driving without insurance you can expect to have your car seized," he warned.
Before the cars are released back to their owners, drivers must prove that they have bought a car insurance policy. They must then pay a £105 fine and £12 for every day their vehicle has been stored.
If the driver refuses to pay, they are liable to be given a fine of up to £5,000 and eight penalty points, which will severely impact their chances of getting a cheap motor insurance quote.
Inspector Walton explained what can happen if you drive with no car insurance or licence: "If you injure somebody or cause extensive damage to property, it can be quite horrendous.
"If you've got a lot of assets and you've caused a lot of damage and you are not insured you are open to be pursued for whatever assets you have."
