Safer driving video game project to help over-50s
A pilot research project has been launched in the USA that is set to lead to cuts in car insurance rates for motorists aged over 50 who achieve high scores playing computer video games.
A range of scientifically-accredited, brain fitness games are being tested that, it is claimed, can improve the quantity and quality of the visual information processed by players.
Early trials have shown that the software from Posit Science can increase driver safety by significant margins with numbers of crashes already shown to be cut by half and dangerous driving manoeuvres reduced by up to 40%.
Called InSight, the range of driving improvement games are said to exercise and improve the human visual system in five ways:
- Speed up visual processing
- Sharpen visual precision
- Enlarge useful field of view
- Expand divided attention
- Improve visual working memory
A spokesman for Allstate, the car insurance company running the trial project among 100,000 Pennsylvanian motorists, said, "With this revolutionary program, we're offering people an innovative solution in hopes of improving their personal safety and quality of life."
Apparently foreseeing the potential profitable benefits of targeting the baby boomer generation as it reaches retirement, Allstate is focusing on improving driving among ageing people who tend to have more accidents after they reach 60 years old.
Allstate will roll out the scheme to other American states next year if research results support the success of the initial tests.
Car cover discounts have been hinted at in media coverage announcing the trial project, although there is no stated guarantee that car insurance rates will be cheaper.
