York level crossing dashers risk lives and cheap motor insurance quotes
Motorists are risking both their lives and their cheap motor insurance quotes at a York level crossing by sneaking through the barriers while they are coming down.
Driver behaviour at the Wigginton Road crossing has been highlighted as the worst in Yorkshire, with many motorists becoming angry and impatient with the long queues that build up.
The police have reported many instances of drivers crossing whilst the red lights are flashing, as well as cutting it even more finely, driving through with just seconds to spare before the barriers reach the ground.
If a driver only makes it halfway across the level crossing, the chances are that they will be killed or very seriously injured when a train comes through. Even if they have time to abandon their vehicle, they risk the train derailing and causing injuries to many passengers onboard.
Clifton councillor David Scott commented: "Dodging the barriers is absolutely senseless. Surely it is better to be five minutes late in this world than five minutes early into the next."
Ian Cuthbertson, councillor for York, reiterated the warning, saying: "Particularly in the rural areas south of York, there is a history of people dodging level crossings and not getting away with it.
"People need to slow down and be patient - that's the only answer," he finished.
Network Rail recognise that there is a particular problem with the Wigginton Road crossing and have recently announced a campaign which aims to stop motorists from making last-minute dashes across it.
Corrine Aldous of duck2water Car Insurance Services said: "By running the red lights on the level crossings, the very least you are risking is your ability to get a cheap motor insurance quote. We hope that the campaign proves very effective and motorists can understand that the lights are for their own safety."
