In 1899, August Horch set up an automobile company in Germany, and two years later saw the first model take to the roads. However, a split in the company occurred several years later, and in 1910 Horch had left to start a new business. He called his new company "Horch" after his own surname, but he was sued by his previous company for trademark infringement. He eventually settled for "Audi" as it is the Latin translation of his surname, which means "hark!" In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, DKW, and Wanderer to form the Auto Union. It is the coming together of these four companies that is symbolised by the four linked rings of the Audi emblem. |

It was through the launch of the Audi Quattro, a car specially designed for racing, that Audi built their reputation for their technical prowess. Their all-wheel drive design was first installed in this model before being extended to all range.

Some of the recent additions to Audis include intelligent crash sensors which control the activation of airbags and the fuel stratified-charge injection technology that gives more power and reduces fuel consumption.
