Online car insurance comparison site says eco-friendly policies have 'huge premium swings'

An online car insurance site has revealed that the cost of 'green' motor insurance policies can vary from one day to another, a fact that may affect the growing number of environmentally-conscious motorists in the UK.

Moneysupermaket.com has carried out research into eco-friendly car insurance policies sold by companies such as More Than and Cooperative Insurance (CIS), and found that there can be remarkable discrepancies in motor insurance quotes.

Richard Mason, director of car insurance at Moneysupermaket.com, said: "Insurers should be applauded for rewarding responsible motoring. But our research shows that.this type of policy is experiencing huge premium swings.

"What might look like a bargain one week could double or even treble in price just days later," he said.

The online car insurance comparison site is advising motorists to shop around for the best motor insurance quotes and then donate to a charity rather than choosing one of the highly fluctuating environmentally-friendly car insurance policies.

Moneysupermaket.com's findings come just days after CIS predicted that more and more UK drivers will be buying into eco-friendly motor insurance as awareness of green issues increases.

A spokesman for CIS said: "All the evidence points to consumers taking on board the issues surrounding climate change.

"From our annual Ethical Consumerism Report, it is apparent that more and more consumers are becoming environmentally aware and that influences what they buy, including the purchase of car insurance."
