Poor map-reading skills unearthed by online car insurance firm
According to research by online car insurance company esure, 35% of motorists now struggle to read a road map, instead preferring to use sat nav systems.
Esure discovered that a large percentage of its interviewees had difficulty with even the most basic map reading tasks. For example, over a third were unable to correctly identify a grid reference, whilst 83% were unfamiliar with the motorway symbol.
The cheap car insurance company found that there was some regional variance with its results, with motorists from London being the worst at reading grid references and drivers from Scotland coming in last in the map symbols test.
The research showed that we are increasingly relying on our sat nav systems to get us around and 63% of those interviewed admitted to the online car insurance provider that they would be utterly lost without the device.
A spokesperson for Ordnance Survey said: "It's time for motorists to take a refresher in map reading skills. Technology is great but the batteries won't run out on a paper map.
"No serious hill walker would rely totally on a GPS device in case the power goes or the signal is lost, so it should be the same for the motorist.
"Many people still enjoy maps and they can really help you build up a sense of the world around you. Knowing how to read a map gives you access to much more information than a set of instructions on a screen."
