The agent in the Telegraph was investigating a man in his forties who was suing a car insurance company after being injured in a motorcycle accident. The accident victim claimed that his back and neck injuries had left him hardly able to walk, yet the investigator recorded him pushing a wheelie bin up his drive. He also claimed he had been left unable to drive, but the plucky surveillance expert followed him as he drove from village to village and then on a 35 mile journey to a dental surgery. After parking, the subject got out of the car and traversed a frosty 100 yard walk to the surgery door; he did so with what was described as "consummate ease".
It was all caught on camera. And so, the surveillance exercise was wrapped up, "Job done!" said the investigator intriguingly referred to in the article as 'Hotel', with his co-agent known as "Sierra". Little did the unsuspecting compensation claimant know that a car insurance worker had probably just deprived him of a substantial amount of money.
Asked whether he ever felt uncomfortable "snooping" on people, Hotel answered, "Why should I?
"I mean, it's you and me who pay for these people through higher premiums. We are staying within the law and trying to do a difficult job, while these people break the law and try to get money by deception. We are here to make sure that everyone pays a fair price for insurance."
