Texting while driving highlights risks to life
and motor insurance

When it comes to driving, mobile phone texting while at the wheel must be close to the very top of the list of most stupid and dangerous things to do in a car. Even with motor insurance cover, it is a struggle to think of anything more crazy.

One thought does come to mind - but, to be frank, it verges on the ridiculous. That thought is about someone trying to drive a vehicle while wearing a blindfold. It is quite absurd and ludicrous to even start to consider that driving without being able to see is a realistic option for any motorist.

Yet, day in and day out - probably every second of every minute - there are bunches of buffoons out there looking away from the road while driving to type phone texts. Words cannot convey how much this beggars belief.

What utter fools these people must be. It is hard to imagine what is passing through their minds while sitting at the wheel. Perhaps the thought pattern goes something like this - see if you can picture the scene:

A man or woman drive their vehicle along a road - it could be a motorway, an A-road or maybe a B-class highway. Maybe they are travelling slowly in bumper-to-bumper traffic or perhaps theirs is a steady, monotonous coast between two junctions.

Insurance disaster

Their mobile phone is nearby - in a pocket, between their legs, stuck in a drinks holder or who knows where. Suddenly they think: "I really must write a text."

Surely that is the key thought that spells disaster? There is, at that precise moment in time, an over-riding mind force that compels them to reach for the mobile. They are confident they can control the car using a mobile phone and decide to do just that. Unbelievable, isn't it?

Amusingly perhaps (although who's laughing?), they almost lose control of the car trying to lever the darn phone from wherever it is stored - a fumbling in the pocket perhaps or a flapping across the dashboard.

Finally, the phone is in their hand. Their eyes leave the road and look down at the little keyboard and screen.

Innocent motorists

Did you spot the stupid, dangerous act they just committed? Yep, that's right, they looked down while driving along a public road with innocent, unsuspecting motorists nearby who might soon be part of a major pile-up.

And of course, not only do these idiots look at their mobile, they start typing a message on it. Only briefly do they look up at the road again. Perhaps they adjust their steering to get back in lane. Then they look down again - for longer this time to check they've typed the word "hello" ok.

Despite having almost crashed the car already, the text must go on - type a few more characters, look up at the road for a very short time, then point the head downwards as quickly as possible to rush another word with stumbling, clumsy tip-tapping fingers.

Don't think there's much need to go on - this is a dreadful recipe for death and disaster, plain and simple. If this wasn't such a serious issue, it is cringe-inducing just thinking about this part. Very scary.
