Awards for Volkswagen

Most Volkswagen owners would give their car a prize if they could; perhaps "Best Car for Fitting the Fishing Kit In" or "Best Vehicle for City Shopping Trips". Over the years, VW cars have triumphed in many prestigious awards thanks to their natty designs and the fantastic quality of manufacture. Here, duck2water takes a look at some of their most recent honours, which have seen the VW Passat receive a particularly high level of praise.

What Car? 2007
2007 was a big year for Volkswagen at the famous What Car? awards, which saw the German manufacturer take home more honours than any other. The VW Golf Match received particular praise from judges as it won the Best Small Family Car category, being described as a "classy contender" and the "final piece of a winning jigsaw".

The practical but good-looking VW Passat was the next to win an award, this time in the Best Family Car category. The 2.0 litre 170 PS particularly impressed the judges, who described the model as being "in a league of its own" and having a "desirable image." Finally, the stylish VW Eos Coupe-Cabriolet with its uniquely designed roof-opening mechanism scooped the "Best Open-Top Car" award.

A spokesperson for Volkswagen said: "We are delighted and particularly proud that the Eos has won on its debut. For the Golf and Passat to have maintained their popularity with the judges to win their classes is also a tremendous achievement."

Auto1 Award 2006
With the finalists of the Auto1 Award being decided by 40 million car enthusiasts from across Europe and a tough panel of judges and motoring experts deciding the winner, the car that comes out on top must be a pretty special motor. In 2006, this honour was given to the Volkswagen Passat.

The chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen AG described the Auto1 Award as "the crowning point of a series of successes", referring to its previous "Car of the Year" wins in several European counties. He went on to put the car's award-winning status down to its "outstanding concept", but pointed out that "fame and honours are a very good basis, but satisfied customers and sustained commercial success are the criteria by which we want to be judged."

Towcar Awards 2007
As well as having success in the mass-market, the VW Passat has also proven its worth in some of the more niche areas of motoring. In 2007, it scooped the overall Towcar Award, marking it as the best vehicle of the year for towing a heavy load, such as a caravan.

A spokesperson for What Car?, one of the magazines involved in the Towcar Awards, said: "After five days of intense testing, the Volkswagen Passat Estate emerged as a clear winner. It makes great sense whatever you're towing, but just as crucial are its abilities in everyday driving and the fact that it's a sound ownership proposition."

Some of the many features which helped the Passat win this award include the Electronic Stabilisation Programme, ASR traction control and ABS braking, along with its four wheel drive and 236lbs of torque.
