Performance
The Golf is really the star of the Volkswagen model range when it comes to performance. Owners of Golf 2.0 diesels just can't stop raving about its great grip, effortless acceleration and fabulous all-round performance, and even owners of other members of the Golf range are full of praise for this popular model.

Polo owners are slightly less enamoured with the performance of their VW, with many reporting that whilst it is great for getting about town and is "okay", it doesn't come anywhere near the legendary Golf. Owners of the little Fox, on the other hand, appear to be quite happy with their car's performance, with even the 1.2 petrol engine being keen to please.

Costs
Generally speaking, Volkswagens are not cheap to buy. Both the Golf and the Polo are relatively expensive to buy, but many feel that they are worth every penny, particularly the Golf. However, this costly initial outlay is counterbalanced by the fact that resale values for VWs are excellent and you will recoup quite a bit of your money when the time comes to part with your car. However, the exception to the high cost of buying is the Fox, which by all accounts, is a real bargain.

As with most cars, you will likely find that the cost of Volkswagen car insurance is much, much higher if you go for one of the larger, sportier models rather than a more moderate performer, which get more moderate quotes. However, you can expect a very good premium if you have a Fox, thanks to this car's low engine size.

As regards fuel economy, no Volkswagen is the most economical car on the roads, but neither are VWs the most thirsty. If you can manage to avoid the temptation to drive your Golf on the quicker side of things, it will actually return you with a half-decent fuel economy.

Quality and looks
VW is well known for producing good-looking cars and owners tend to have few complaints about the quality of their motor's exterior. The Beetle is a particularly good example, with even the most die hard old Beetle fans being impressed by the looks of the more recent, face-lifted model. Even owners of the diminutive Fox like the look and external finish of this lower priced VW.

However, when it comes to the internal looks and quality of VWs, there is some disparity across the model range. Whilst owners of the Golf praise the quality of their car's interior, Polo owners in particular often seem to feel slightly short-changed by theirs, with the word "tacky" coming up in more than one review. Some Fox owners also reported that despite a generally nice interior, they had experienced some problems with latches breaking.
