Volkswagen Concept A
Mixing and matching car "genres" is a popular idea but take the wrong pair to merge, and you can go horribly off course and end up with a vehicle that just looks wrong (as proven by other manufacturers). However, somehow Volkswagen has managed to combine the sleek shape of a coupe with the stance of an SUV to form the rather gorgeous Concept A.

Its physically powerful body protects a spacious, airy cabin which can be further enhanced by the expansive soft top. Probably its most unusual feature is the doors opening to face one another, negating the need for a B pillar. Its engine runs on the "maximum driving pleasure, minimum consumption" maxim, making this a car to suit all motorists. For those for whom this sounds like a dream car, fear not, for there is a somewhat similar Volkswagen production model due to hit the forecourts in 2008.

Volkswagen IROC
The Volkswagen IROC has a very distinctive sporty look which will quickly settle it into the mind of any sports car fan. Based on the classic Scirocco but with more curves, it has aggressive, powerful styling and a long roof culminating in a rear that falls away sharply - looks which are accentuated by the Viper Green paint used on the concept car.

The IROC is a sports car in every regard - apart from the fact that it is actually practical as well as being fun to drive. It is a four-seater (complete with bucket seats and five point seat belts in the front) and even has a roomy boot for luggage - features alien to most sports cars. Its petrol engine, whilst being as responsive as you like, is very efficient and the needle on the fuel tank gauge drops as if the IROC is a diesel. Rumours suggest that Volkswagen might put the IROC into production - well, here's hoping!

Volkswagen Ragster
The VW Ragster is another of those combination cars; this time being a hybrid of a ragtop (convertible) and a speedster. Although Volkswagen fans haven't been won over quite as much as VW might have hoped by this take on the Beetle, it does give hope for a future of innovative and exciting Beetles.

What the VW designers have done is flatten out the top of the Beetle, shortening the whole car quite dramatically, and replace the roof with a retractable soft top. Whilst they had hold of the flattening idea, they had a go at the wheel arches too, substantially toning down the flared arches which we have come to know. The double stripes which run up the centre of the bonnet and down the back of the car are a stylish touch.
